I chose to create a poster for a specific time period in design history. The time period I chose to focus on was the early 1900's around the time of the Arts and Crafts movement. This topic was chosen while studying the history of graphic design and I'd influence on trends and culture.
RESEARCH
My interest in this period of time was sparked mostly though research of William Morris and other great contributors to the movement such as John Ruskin, May Morris, and Gustav Stickley. I chose specifically to create my own pattern wallpaper to mimic William Morris' famous designs.
SKETCHES
For my sketches, I began by determining the essential information for the poster. I was required to include the name of the movement, key figures, and a brief overview or quote that helped the viewer understand the time period. I knew I also wanted to include a lot of intricate graphics, so I focused on what composition would look balanced without being too cluttered.
FINAL DESIGN
For my final design, I chose a poster that ended up emphasizing the details of the artwork above all else. I also ended up using several Art Noveau typefaces to include the information. Although I enjoy the final design, I am a little disappointed with how different mine seems when compared to Morris' work. I tried my best to mimic the colors and texture of a textile printing process but as this was a digital painting, it was difficult to get the style right.
